<p>Getting our carbon footprint down, regardless of our viewpoint, is a positive thing. You could drive yourself crazy trying to reduce that footprint to zero, but there are approaches that can be taken that are easy, simple, and free!</p>
<p>Much of our daily life is surrounded by technological advances that make aspects of life easier. Think about the napkin. A simple, mass produced paper product single-handedly made take-away food much, much easier. But now we realize how much wood is required to make our throw away face wiping products. At our home, we have gone back to tea towels. We throw them in with laundry the we would be doing anyway and we&#8217;re reusing towel. As a special bonus, cloth is so much nicer on my baby fresh face!</p>
<p>Get back into local foods. Often you&#8217;ll find these are all natural and/or organic. I&#8217;ve found some people recoil from these terms, as if I&#8217;m trying to convert them into something uncivilized. Some people think this means they&#8217;ll be wearing linen tunics, leather sandals made from the carcass of animals that have died from natural causes, certified of course, banned from razors and forced to change their names to something akin to Wandering River Love, or something of the sort. There are growing studies on the benefits of all natural/organic foods for both the environment and ones own health but you don&#8217;t need to switch for these environmentalists. Switch for yourself. You&#8217;ll most often be supporting local businesses &#8211; and that&#8217;s good for your community. AND you&#8217;ll find food has something called FLAVOR. Yea, this is so good, the foods are better tasting from meats, to vegetables to fruits, they taste good!</p>
<p>Nix those nice, convenient plastic water bottles. Research shows that BPAs (those nasty chemicals found in certain plastic water bottles) have adverse effects on health. Check out Nalgene, which has started making BPA-free bottles. You can also take a look at metal bottles, which are often recyclable. Believe it or not, even glass bottles are starting to appear &#8211; check out LoveBottleDOTnet. If you like to filter your water before drinking it, both Brita and PUR make high-quality filters. As a matter of fact, new studies suggest that tap water is often healthier than the expensive, bottled variety. Why? Municipal water districts answer to EPA standards, which require multiple tests a day. In the meantime, bottled water companies must only report to the FDA, which only mandates once-a-week testing. Thus, tap water is actually better for you! Crazy.</p>
<p>Try to reduce or recycle your packaging in any way that you can. While I love liquid laundry detergent, I am switching to powdered so that I can recycle the cardboard box (and my tea towels are just as clean!) Easy, right? If I am going to the store and only purchasing one or two items, you probably won&#8217;t see my walk out with a bag. Do I really need extra packaging for the half-gallon of milk I just bought? I&#8217;ll also skip the bag when it comes to certain produce items, like potatoes and cucumbers.</p>
<p>Sometimes, we need a little extra motivation, and for me, that can very well be my wallet. I recently switched all of the lightbulbs in my house from the traditional ones to the little twisting CFLs, as they burn far cooler. I now use 13-watt bulbs for 60 watts of light! You can also save on electricity by plugging all of your electronic appliances into power strips. Most appliances, including cell phone chargers, will use power even when they are technically not in use, which allows them to start off faster. Well, I installed the strips and cut my electric bill in half!</p>
<p>You can even use social networking to be more green. Get a FREE Facebook account, if you do not have one already, and install the &#8220;lil Green Patch&#8221; application. You will be set up with an online garden and can then send online plants to all of your Facebook friends for THEIR online gardens. For every friend you send a cute little virtual plant to, you actually save one square foot of rainforest (you know, the REAL kind). It&#8217;s easy to do and you get cute little plants!</p>
<p>And for you car aficionados out there, you will be pleased to learn that, according to the ACEEE, the greenest car in the United States, for the 6th straight year in a row, is the Honda Civic.</p>

This movement towards organic foods is one that definitely has some great benefits associated with it. However, the organic label, when applied to meat, may not mean what you think it does.</p>
<p>When we see the organic label on the packaging of a food product, we tend to automatically think that the food must be very natural, clean, and healthy. There&#8217;s an implication that organic food is free from the loose morals of the large-scale food industry.</p>
<p>This may be true for vegetables, but it&#8217;s a different story when it comes to meat. The industry strives to portray organic meat as a product of purity, but that&#8217;s not always the case.</p>
<p>Fish provides one example where the organic label doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean what we think it does. All that&#8217;s required for a USDA organic label for fish is that the fish is wild. However, the label doesn&#8217;t enforce any regulations on the amount of heavy metals found in the fish, such as mercury.</p>
<p>The organic label for meat also doesn&#8217;t place any regulations on the treatment and living conditions of livestock.</p>
<p>The organic label does address the types of foods that can be fed to animals raised for meat. The USDA doesn&#8217;t allow meat to obtain an organic label if the animals are fed substances such as hormones, antibiotics, and other chemicals. So the organic label does ease our fears that we may be ingesting foreign substances along with our meat, but it does nothing to assure us that the animals lived a healthy and happy life.</p>
<p>In any case, if you&#8217;re at the grocery store and find that you have a choice between organic and standard meat, the organic meat will be a better option. If you&#8217;d like to buy meat with a certification regarding the quality of the animal&#8217;s life as well as its diet, look for high-welfare labels. The RSPCA label is a good example of a high-welfare label, and you would also do well to seek out biodynamic labels.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s obvious that there&#8217;s a disparity between the standards of raising organic meat versus the public conception of what the organic label means. In order to address this problem, two things must happen: the public must educate itself regarding the real qualifications for the labeling of meat, and the industry must enact stricter standards for the organic label.</p>

<p>First of all, it&#8217;s very difficult to any find information on the Atkins grapefruit diet plan at all. Clever people realize that when someone is carrying out a deception, or a con, they will often gloss over the facts. This is what the Atkins grapefruit diet seems to be doing in an attempt to get people to associate it with two seemingly effective diets.</p>
<p>Is the Atkins Grapefruit Diet part of the Atkins Diet or recommended by the late Dr. Atkins&#8217; company? The answer is a resounding no, not only is there no mention of the Atkins Grapefruit Diet on the Atkins web site, but there is no fruit of any kind mentioned in the list of allowed foods in the Atkins diet Induction phase either.</p>
<p>The induction phase includes the following foods: fish of all kinds; all fowl such as turkey and chicken; any shellfish; any meat such as beef or pork; eggs cooked in any style including fried; cheese; vegetables; herbs and spices; fats and oils; low carbohydrate beverages including diet soft drinks.</p>
<p>Please, notice one thing &#8211; fruit is not on that list. Later phases of the Atkins diet do include limited amounts of fruits such as cantaloupe and even lemon juice, and the pre-maintenance and maintenance phases even specifically allow small quantities of grapefruit. But when compared to the amount of Grapefruit recommended on the Atkins Grapefruit Diet, again there is a massive disagreement.</p>
<p>The Atkins Grapefruit Diet recommends a cup of grapefruit juice or a cup of grapefruit sections, with 8 and 18 carbs respectively. Even the most liberal phases of the Atkins diet recommends limiting intake to below 8 carbs per day, when it comes to grapefruit. That&#8217;s a direct contradiction of one plan to the other.</p>
<p>Most sensible people would turn to the Atkins website itself the moment they heard of the Atkins Grapefruit Diet and when they found no reference of that diet on their site, a red light would flash and an alarmbell would sound.</p>
<p>In general, please remember this: any diet that relies very heavily on one kind of food, such as grapefruit on a grapefruit diet, is not healthy for any but very short periods. The Atkins Grapefruit Diet is not linked with the Atkins diet, and could interfere with the results of the Atkins diet, especially in its early phases.</p>
